On the afternoon of July 19, 2024, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) Zhao Leji held talks with Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of Chile Karol Cariola Oliva at the Great Hall of the People.

Zhao Leji said that last October, President Xi Jinping held fruitful talks with President Gabriel Boric during his visit to China, drawing a blueprint of the development of China-Chile relations in the new era. China always regards Chile as an important cooperative partner in Latin America and the Asia-Pacific, and is ready to work with Chile to deliver on the important common understandings reached by the two heads of state, continue the traditional friendship, upgrade the level of cooperation and continuously enrich the China-Chile comprehensive strategic partnership.

Zhao Leji pointed out that Chile was the first South American country to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China. Over the past half century and more, no matter how the international landscape changes, China-Chile relations have always maintained sound and steady development, which is a fine example of solidarity and cooperation between developing countries. The two sides should consolidate political mutual trust and continue to firmly support each other's core interests and major concerns. Zhao Leji called on the two countries to strengthen strategic synergy and deepen practical cooperation in various fields. The two sides should also enhance people-to-people and cultural exchanges, promote mutual understanding and amity, and continuously consolidate public support for the friendship between the two countries. The two countries need to strengthen international cooperation, safeguard fairness and justice, and jointly uphold true multilateralism and free trade.

Zhao Leji emphasized that the NPC of China is ready to strengthen cooperation with Chile's National Congress, enhance friendly exchanges at all levels of the legislature, and well establish and utilize a regular exchange mechanism to increase understanding, trust and friendship. Based on the functions and responsibilities of the legislative bodies, the two countries should learn from each other in such areas as legislative supervision, women's rights and interests protection, and ecological and environmental protection, approve in time and urge the implementation of legal documents on practical cooperation between the two countries, promote to foster a fair, transparent and non-discriminatory business environment, and provide legal guarantee for high-quality Belt and Road cooperation. The two countries should strengthen coordination and cooperation under the Inter-Parliamentary Union and other multilateral mechanisms to safeguard the common interests of developing countries.

Introducing the Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Zhao Leji said that China is ready to strengthen exchanges and mutual learning with Chile on reform and opening-up experience, share development opportunities, achieve mutual benefit and win-win results, and be good friends and partners on their respective path of development and revitalization.

Karol Cariola Oliva said that the friendship between Chile and China is based on common values, and both countries are committed to upholding international law and supporting multilateralism and free trade. Chile firmly pursues the one-China principle. All political parties and various sectors of society in Chile are highly consistent in continuously developing relations with China. Next year will mark the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The Chamber of Deputies of Chile is ready to strengthen friendly exchanges with the NPC of China, share legislative experience, promote bilateral cooperation in various fields such as the Belt and Road Initiative, economy, culture, and science and technology, and constantly enhance the friendship between the two peoples.
