Wang Yi Meets with Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero

On July 7, 2022 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero on the sidelines of the Group of Twenty (G20) Foreign Ministers' Meeting on the Bali Island.

Wang Yi said, the heads of state of China and Argentina have established solid mutual trust and friendship, providing strategic guidance for developing bilateral relations. China appreciates Argentina's adherence to a friendly policy toward China, and stands ready to work with the Argentine side to jointly commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries, advance high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, and help accelerate respective development and revitalization. Both sides should take the opportunity of the 2022 Year of China-Argentina Friendship and Cooperation to enhance mutual understanding and mutual perception, cement the public support for bilateral friendship, and jointly stride toward the next 50 years of bilateral pragmatic cooperation.

Wang Yi said, the Chinese side understands and supports Argentina in safeguarding its territorial sovereignty and national dignity, and will continue to stand firmly with the Argentine side on issues concerning each other's core interests. China and Argentina, both important emerging markets, share extensive consensus on and common interests in international and regional affairs. China is ready to work with Argentina to advocate and act on true multilateralism, safeguard basic norms governing international relations and uphold international fairness and justice.

Cafiero said, Argentina and China enjoy a time-honored friendship. The Argentine side admires China's development achievements and appreciates China's support to Argentina in safeguarding the sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands. Argentina firmly pursues the one-China principle and hopes to seek greater synergy with the Belt and Road Initiative, make good use of bilateral cooperation mechanisms, and well plan bilateral cooperation in the next 50 years.

Cafiero said, Argentina speaks highly of China's important leading role in advancing global development, thanks China for inviting Argentina to attend the series of meetings of BRICS leaders, and stands ready to strengthen synergy with the BRICS mechanism. China takes an objective position on international affairs and appeals for a ceasefire to give peace a chance. The Argentine side appreciates that, and stands ready to work with China to strengthen South-South cooperation, uphold multilateralism and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of emerging markets.

The two sides exchanged views on cooperation between China and Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries, and agreed to strengthen communication and coordination, so as to help LAC countries address the spillover effect of the Ukraine situation. Wang Yi said, China supports Argentina's role as the rotating presidency of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, and stands ready to join hands with Argentina to build a China-LAC community with a shared future featuring equality, mutual benefit, innovation, openness, and benefits for the people.
