On July 24, 2016 local time, when attending a series of Foreign Ministers' meetings on East Asian cooperation in Laos, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Vientiane with Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Pehin Dato Lim Jock Seng of Brunei.

Wang Yi expressed that China and Brunei enjoy a sound relationship. For a long time, both sides have proceeded from bilateral relations and the big picture of China-ASEAN relations, and maintained sound communication on the South China Sea issue. The "dual-track approach", proposed by Brunei and advocated by China, requires specific disputes to be peacefully resolved through consultation by parties directly concerned, and stability in the South China Sea to be jointly maintained by China and the ASEAN. It fully conforms to regulations of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC), principles of the international law represented by the UN Charter and the common aspiration as well as interests of countries in this region. Although this process was disturbed, things have come to a close. The significance and effectiveness of the "dual-track approach" are once again highly recognized by all sides.

Pehin Dato Lim Jock Seng noted that leaders of both countries share sound sentiment. Brunei always calls for all sides to peacefully resolve the South China Sea disputes through bilateral consultation and in diplomatic manners on the basis of the "dual-track approach", which conforms to the common interests of the ASEAN and other sides. Brunei will continue to stick to this stance. The ASEAN should carry out cooperation with China, continue to well implement the DOC and advance consultation on the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea, which is vital to safeguarding regional peace and stability.
