China Wins Five Golds at World Cup Diving Championships in Athens

In the last day finals of 2004 FINA Diving World Cup, Chinese veteran Tian Liang tightened his grip on the 10-meter platform title on 776.70 points on February 22 Sundayhere .

His compatriot Hu Jia placed second in 746.52, with Alexandre Despaitie of Canada bagging home the bronze medal in 688.26.

During the finals, the Chinese were both applauded for their elegant dives and stupendous skills. Tian, a key figure of the Chinese diving team, won the highest points in his first three dives and kept his supremacy throughout.

Earlier on the same day, Guo Jingjing and Wu Minxia awarded China its fourth gold medal in the women's 3-meter synchronized springboard.

After failing to reap any gold medals in the women's singles, China took all the titles in the men's and women's synchronized springboard and platform events for a total collection of five golds, three silvers and two bronzes.

Besides, the Chinese divers also won the top honors of best team, best men's team and best women's team.

The Athens meet, which concluded its five-day competition on February 22 with the participation of 202 divers from 49 countries and regions, served both as a warm-up test for the facilities and qualifier for the 2004 Olympic Games.
